The younger preschool class emphasizes social skills
as part of play activities and daily routine.
In a "home-away-from-home" atmosphere,
the children's attention span is increased
while learning necessary skills
to prepare them for success in school.

The High Reach Learning Curriculum introduces concepts appropriate to this age group.  The curriculum includes activities intended to develop color, shape, and number recognition;  language knowledge; large and small motor skills; understanding of one-to-one correspondence;  and problem-solving ability.  The High Reach Caterpillars Program encourages development of basic skills through exciting monthly themes.  Simple experiments, hands-on explorations,  and free-form art are just a few of the activities that enable each child to learn about the world first hand.  The classroom provides a blend of activities to meet the individual needs of every child.

Large and small motor coordination is improved through various media.  Self-esteem is heightened as the children master more skills, such as putting on their own coats and shoes, learning hand-washing and other bathroom skills, and helping teachers set up the family-style lunch and snack, etc.

At family-style meals, the children take turns pouring their own milk and serving themselves. The children learn to speak to one another in a positive way.
When they disagree, they are encouraged to resolved their conflicts peacefully.

Our class is always on the move.
We visit our community to learn about community helpers.
We play outside on our playground and at the University of Scranton's Rose Garden.
We also walk to the local children's library for story hour.

We encourage parental involvement.
We have several social events during the year to which parents are invited. An especially important event takes place in June - to foster a good self image we finish our High Reach Caterpillar Curriculum with a Certificate of Achievement Party.
